3D printing is often referred to as additive manufacturing, putting it in contrast with more traditional forms of manufacutring such as subtractive or formative.
Given the relatively slow speed of 3D printing technologies today, it is mostly used by manufacturers for rapid prototyping or special applications as opposed to mass production, although it is being used for mass production and creating end products as well.
